In a time of shrinking resources, donors and board members are demanding higher levels of performance from nonprofit organizations. More than ever before, these stakeholders expect demonstrable results for their investments of time and money. However, high performance in the nonprofit sector is often elusive—hard to define and difficult to achieve. Key to the challenge is that the numerous barriers to nonprofit high performance are often different from those in the for-profit sector. This session - which will highlight both examples from the US and from organizations that are international or based outside the U.S. - will analyze some of the barriers to high performance and discuss a new framework to address them.
Allen Grossman - MBA Class of 1957 - was appointed a Harvard Business School Professor of Management Practice in July 2000. He joined the Business School faculty in July 1998, with a concurrent appointment as a Visiting Scholar at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He has taught, Entrepreneurship in the Social Sector and Effective Leadership of a Social Enterprise and is faculty chair for the Public Education Leadership Project (PELP), a joint project of HBS and Harvard Graduate School Education. He co-chairs the executive education programme, Performance Measurement and Management of Nonprofit Organizations, and teaches in the HBS executive education programs, Strategic Perspectives for Nonprofit Managers (SPNM) and Governing for Nonprofit Excellence (GNE) and others.
He has authored or co-authored cases, articles and books about nonprofit management including, High Performance Nonprofit Organizations: Managing Upstream for Greater Impact, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., co-authored with Christine Letts and William Ryan. Mr. Grossman is on the executive committee of Mercy Corps an international development organization with programs in 40 countries. He works closely with the leadership team to reach new levels of performance. He previously served as board chair of Search for Common Ground, a conflict resolution organization with programs in 30 countries.
