The Upside of Turbulence
Many people think that the current market turbulence will cease as the global economy pulls out of recession. Dr. Donald Sull argues that this is wrong. By nearly every measure—stock price volatility, corporate mortality, currency crises, technological disruption—turbulence has been rising steadily since the 1970s, and it will continue to rise after the downturn ends. He maintains that turbulence is here to stay.
But he argues that this is not all bad news. Volatile markets create opportunities to create economic value, pull ahead of rivals, and introduce innovative products and services. Seizing the upside of turbulence requires the alertness to spot opportunities before rivals and the agility to seize them. Based on a decade of research into some of the world’s most turbulent markets, including China, Brazil, and European fast fashion, Professor Sull will discuss practical steps you can take to thrive in a turbulent world.
Dr. Donald Sull is a Strategy Professor and Faculty Director of Executive Education at London Business School. The Economist identified his theory of active inertia as an idea that shaped business management over the past century, and Fortune listed him among the top ten new management gurus.
His publications include five books, and several best-selling Harvard Business Review articles. Sull has three degrees from Harvard, and taught entrepreneurship at the Harvard Business School. He worked as a consultant with McKinsey & Company, and as a management-investor with the leveraged buyout firm.
Canapés and drinks will be served. Guests are welcome.
