THE HBS ANGELS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION LONDON CHAPTER

We are a group of London-area Harvard Alumni committed to investing in early stage businesses and supporting the rapidly growing UK start-up ecosystem. We help each other make investments in a wide range of early stage companies, providing both seasoned and new investors with Harvard affiliations access to quality deals and investment knowledge.

OUR MISSION

To harness the financial and commercial acumen of Harvard alumni in the UK to establish a self-sustaining organization that will be a thriving and nurturing contributor to angel investing, entrepreneurship, and HBS.

OUR GOALS

 Match members of our organization with innovative companies and entrepreneurial projects seeking funds or partners;

 Help entrepreneurs presenting to our organization to raise funding and secure value added advice for their businesses;

 Provide on-going education opportunities to the HBS community on angel investing and entrepreneurship, including via seminars and events;

 Promote the relationship between HBS alumni, HBS faculty, and current HBS students with an interest in early stage ventures and angel investing;

 Assist in creating a thriving and nurturing ecosystem of UK entrepreneurs and investors.

OUR BACKGGROUND & SCOPE

Our members include experienced entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, investment bankers, and others. We play a diverse range of roles in start-ups we’ve identified, including "money only" passive investor, board membership, CEO membership, and operating advisors. We are interested in investment opportunities from early to growth equity stages – no Harvard affiliation is required to present to our organisation. These opportunities are likely to be in the UK within sectors in which our screening committee has expertise, but we are open to sourcing and membership from outside of the UK in the medium-term.

OUR OPPORTUNITY CONTEXT

The relative lack of angel investing capabilities in Europe, including the UK, creates opportunities to (i) service currently unmet capital demands from quality start ups and to (ii) work in partnership with established later stage investors for follow-on rounds, especially given the high penetration of Harvard alumni in the VC community in Europe and beyond.

OUR VALUE PROPOSITION FOR ENTREPRENEURS

We have identified the following factors that we believe we can capitalize on to quickly establish our presence as a go-to value-adding investment partner for both entrepreneurs and other established investment vehicles:

 The relative lack of exit opportunities in Europe vs. US for start ups creates an opportunity for us to add value as investors by leveraging the Harvard network to help European entrepreneurs we fund raise subsequent rounds/find exits in the US.

 Our network can provide helpful VC introductions on a global basis which may be beneficial to complete rounds.

 Entrepreneurs can benefit from adding experienced Harvard alumni as investors and advisors, who in turn can help access the global Harvard community.

 There is value to entrepreneurs in quick and efficient investment decision-making processes, especially at the seed stage. Given the decentralized nature of the investment decisions made by individual members post the pitch events, entrepreneurs can expect quick turnaround on investment decision-making.

OUR VALUE PROPOSITION FOR ANGEL INVESTORS

Both seasoned and beginning angel investors will benefit from this organization as they can:

 Access to quality deal flow that has been screened by HBS alumni with sector expertise;

 Gain access to the UK entrepreneurial community;

 Experience and contribute to entrepreneurial ventures as investors and advisors, while maintaining a full-time employment in corporate roles;

 Receive insights from other members and through educational events on how to be an effective angel investor; and

 Benefit from market intelligence garnered from the other 14 HBS Angel networks.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership shall be open to anyone who has attended or been on the staff of the Harvard Business School or Harvard University and is regarded by the Harvard Business School or Harvard University as an alumnus in good standing.

Non-Harvard alumni are accepted on an invitation only basis and may include friends, family, or others recommended by a Harvard Alumni and accepted by the Executive Committee of the HBS Angels London to be value-adding members of the Club and community. In particular, we welcome investors who can share their industry/operational and investment expertise with our group and are actively seeking early stage angel investment opportunities.

HBS Angels members consist primarily of accredited investors who have the risk tolerance and desire to make seed to early stage investments. As such there is an expectation that members attending our pitch events have the capability and intent to invest at least £25K per annum.

The Club has a strict policy against members inappropriately soliciting other members or entrepreneurs as a client for their business. The Executive Committee will revoke membership for this or other similar actions immediately.
