Does it Really Make a Difference?

David Placek CEO & Founder, Lexicon Branding

What is the secret to creating a memorable, enduring name for a company? David Placek points out that the name of a company is the first thing a consumer experiences and that it has to be engaging, remarkable and memorable. A corporate or product name also represents a singular opportunity to tell the consumer something of importance about the new idea.

Lexicon’s founder and C.E.O., David Placek, maintains that the best name brands, like poems, work by compressing into a single euphonious word an array of specific, resonant meanings and associations.  Names don’t have to be clever or overly creative – he thinks it is more important to develop a name that’s strategic--one that helps to tell the company’s story and underscores its idea.

Lexicon Branding was founded in 1982 works with leading companies internationally - adding research, positioning and trademark services, and a global network of linguists - to develop names that can travel the world. It has completed more than 2,500 projects in categories as diverse as high technology to beverages.  Lexicon's most successful names — among them Pentium, for Intel; Swiffer, for Proctor & Gamble; PowerBook, for Apple; Dasani, for Coca-Cola; Blackberry — have become immensely lucrative global brands, which collectively have brought in billions of dollars for their companies.

David Placek is the CEO and Founder of Lexicon Branding, based in San Francisco.  He is probably the leading expert in the world on how to name companies.  The New Yorker Magazine, which profiled Placek in 2011, highlights Lexicon’s secret sauce as “Unpredictable Imagination,” and Fast Company  states "No one in the naming world has generated more envy than a boutique firm called Lexicon.”

David is also a Managing Partner of RiverLane Vineyard located in Sonoma, California and a board member of NatureBridge, a non-profit dedicated to connecting youth to the natural world and fostering responsible actions to sustain it. He studied Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles and International Relations at George Washington University.  He frequently lectures at the Stanford Business School.

This Joint event is also the first educational event organised by the newly founded HBS Angels of London – If you wish to kept informed about future Investor Pitch, Educational & Networking events, or are interested in membership details, please email membership@hbsangelslondon.com
